Several years ago, a friend of mine
shared a story about how she started her
own consulting company. She had
been laid off from one of those 'good
jobs' in the Silicon Valley during one
of the high-tech downturns. For years
prior, she had been toying with the idea
of starting her own company...but never
quite made the leap.
Once 'freed' from her corporate
responsibilities however, she took the
opportunity to step back and revisit her
dreams, priorities and goals. She very
easily could have embarked on a job
search with her well-honed skills.

She knew however that if ever she were to launch
her own venture, this was likely the very best
time. So instead she turned to
nature to contemplate her yearnings and options.
She asked for guidance and the courage to follow
her heart. She was afraid and unsure and wanted
a sign that it was OK to start her own company.
At that moment, she glanced down to the ground
and saw a four-leaf clover!
Her choice was made and a new enterprise was
born. As she shared that story with me
years later, she reached in her wallet and
pulled out that very four-leaf clover. It
was, for her, a symbol of the correctness of her
choice that she turned to whenever she doubted
herself or her ability.
Most of us don't have a four-leaf clover in
those challenging moments. But in reality, we
don't really need one. Her truth was
always within her. She just thought
she needed some evidence to believe her truth -
so she found it.
I always encourage my clients to follow their
hearts. As I'm writing this the
words to "Climb Every Mountain" started playing
in my head. "Follow every rainbow 'til you
find your dream."
The road may not always be smooth and easy.
And it's always wise to prepare when you leap.
But do not die an unlived life. Dare to dream!
Dare to act! |

ARTICLE – TRUST & DELEGATION |
|
 |
I've been having lots of conversations with
my clients lately about delegation. I
work with business owners, financial
advisors and corporate executives. It
seems to not matter what role they play,
many people are hesitant to let go.
|
|
They tell me it's too hard. It's
not worth the time it takes.
There is no one to delegate to.
"Houhy!", I say (Is that a word?)
It IS hard, but it's just as hard being
swamped and overworked yourself.
(Hmmm...might there be a martyr at play
here?)
I used to have a hard time delegating.
I didn't think anyone else would do as
good a job as I would. Well,
maybe, maybe not. But I've come to
realize that not everything on my plate
has to be done perfectly. It just
had to get done! |
 |
Having recognized that, I've been able to
attract some wonderful people around me lately
that are eager and willing. Many will need
training, but I can see already the value and
potential payoff of investing the time and
effort bringing them up to speed. |
| |
|
I'm taking the time to learn what they love and
think they are good at. I'm taking the
time to share my goals and dreams...and how they
fit in.
I read somewhere that delegation is the highest
form of respect. Delegating takes trust -
on both sides. I have to trust that you
want to do a good job and that you will.
You have to trust that I'll be patient with you
as you learn. Communication is the key.
Share your vision and expectations. Find
out what people want. Look for the
marriage between your goals and theirs. That's
where the gold is. Mine it. |
