MESSAGE
FROM THE PRESIDENT |
|
 |
 |
I was in Chicago and southern
Illinois last week.
Gosh! I'd forgotten what Midwestern
falls feel like.
The leaves (the ones that were left
anyway) were various shades of
brown, red and orange. The air
was crisp and cool.
This is the time of year when people
start pulling back |
|
|
|
and preparing to wrap up another year.
I hope yours has been joyful and profitable
and encourage you not to pull back but to
finish the year strong. Dust off those
resolutions from January and sprint toward
the finish line. Read the article, PIP
Tip™ and resource to support you with this. |
You can do it! |
|
FEATURE ARTICLE – TAKING
HIGHER GROUND |
|
 |
|
When we're immersed in the
day-to-day 'issues' of life and
work, we get so caught up in our
struggles that we sometimes lose
perspective.
Our current dilemmas feel
inescapable and consuming. We
often can't see past them. We
feel trapped and even hopeless.
When the weight of the world is
bearing down, |
 |
here are some ideas for you:
-
Take a break. Do something
different for a few minutes then return
to your 'problem'
-
Get out of the office. Go
for a walk.
-
Find someone you can vent to who won't
unduly sympathize with you (thereby
reaffirming your sense of helplessness)
but who might help you gain some
distance from the situation.
-
Go for a hike. OK, I know winter
is approaching in many spots in the
northern hemisphere, but being around
trees (even hibernating ones) and open
sky is much more relaxing than sitting
in a cube or office with constantly
ringing phones, dinging email systems
and co-workers, bosses and employees who
are putting out their own fires.
I'm lucky enough to live near the hill from
which the photo above was shot. When
I'm stressed, I head up the street, climb
the hill and look back on the city.
From there, that higher ground, my
perspective shifts. The problems seem
much smaller and more manageable from 'up
there'. The terrain is a little too
'raw' (potential scorpions and other
creatures) to sit down and relax, but even
standing for a few minutes helps clear my
head.
If
there isn't a real hill near you, try
looking out the window of a tall building.
Or the next time you're on an airplane,
stare out of the window. You can take
higher ground physically in this way or you
can project yourself mentally above this
plane. Look back down on your problems
and when you notice how small they are now,
you'll be able to solve them more easily.
If
you'd like some support, check out Track #3
on the Mini-Meditation CD below. It's
all about creativity and innovation
available by reaching higher ground.
