 MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
We're approaching an historic event in the United States with the Presidential election next month.  We will either have an African American President or a woman as Vice-President.  Either way, I'm hopeful that the team will be able to lead us out of the financial mess our economy is in and begin, at least, to restore our leadership in the global community.

Sunday night I was rounding out the manuscript for Leadership without Limits and found one of John F. Kennedy's speeches to Congress back in 1961. In it, he implored our representatives to increase the budget by $531 million (sounds small doesn't it?) to "win the battle that is now going on around the world between freedom and tyranny".

Interesting, huh?

Almost 50 years have passed and the players have changed, but apparently, the underlying issue has not.  Then today, a friend (Dr. Jim Garrett, Optimal Health Center) sent out an email that stated that Centenarians have lived through 20 recessions since 1907 including the Great Depression.

I guess the phrase, "Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose" (The more things change, the more they remain the same), really does apply.

In any event, with all of this going on, I now implore you to get involved.  Inform yourself, analyze the issues  and the candidates' platforms and records.  People have been jailed and died to ensure that women and blacks could vote in this country.  Don't waste the past.  Regardless or your gender or ethnicity, invest in the future and VOTE!

FEATURE ARTICLE – LEADING IN CHAOS

Change is constant...especially these days.  It seems that we're inundated with it.  Change comes to us from outside and sometimes we're the culprit launching new initiatives on those who support us.

It's critical that leaders take a long-term view and communicate that view during times of change.  If your firm is suffering from an unending stream of new initiatives or crises (or even if you're the perpetrator of change), here are some questions you can pose to help people navigate their way through.

1.   How do you believe that you might benefit from this change?

2.   What personal concerns do you have about this change?

3.  What information do you need in order to deal with and support this change?

4.  What operational questions do you have about this change?

5.  How can we get the word out to people about this change?  What will they want to know?

6.  How can we address the operational needs other people may have?

7.  With whom should we collaborate while implementing this change?

8. What ideas do you have for improving the implementation plans that have been outlined?

9.  What have we not anticipated, thought of or addressed?

Involve people in your change efforts as early as possible.  Help them become change champions.  Gather input from as many sources as possible and communicate, communicate, communicate.

 PIP Tip

"Greatness is not in where we stand, but in what direction we are moving. We must sail sometimes with the wind and sometimes against it -- but sail we must and not drift, nor lie at anchor."
