Greetings!
|
| The
desert heat has finally started
to dissipate! I went out early
this morning and actually
felt cold…well by desert
standards at least! It was
probably in the 70s.
The autumnal
equinox was just a few days
ago. The word "equinox"
was derived from Latin term
"æquinoctium"
which, in turn, came from
"æquus"
(equal), and "nox"
(night).
The equinoxes
are not fixed points on
the celestial sphere but
move westward along the
ecliptic, passing through
all the constellations of
the zodiac
in 26,000 years! This motion
is called the precession
of the equinoxes. Read
more here
and here.
In many
parts of the country, you’ll
be enjoying beautiful scenes
like this one.

Article - HOW TALL IS YOUR FLAGPOLE? |
 |
|
|
  |
 |
|
I had an
interesting conversation with one of the participants
at last week’s retreat. She had flown in
from a long distance and shared how clear-headed
she felt while in the air. She asked others of
us if we had ever experienced being more able
to think clearly in a plane.
I had noticed the very same
thing this past summer as I flew around to various
conferences. I had attributed it in part to the
daily clutter that built up as a result of my
multi-tasking nature and my (dare-I-say-it) lack
of discipline of cleaning up my stacks.
However, the clarity
came from something more than that, I believe.
Looking down on the earth (or at the top of the
clouds) evokes in me an entirely different perspective
than muddling or rushing around in the chaos of
my life’s daily activities. I think more
strategically and more things seem possible up
there.
“What
does this have to do with a flagpole”,
you might be asking. Well, just yesterday, I was
driving home and passed a small building that
had a flagpole in front of it. At the top of the
flagpole flew a huge (North) American flag that
seemed too big and out of place. It made the engineer
in me think there must me some proportion chart
that says ‘If the flag you want is X
by Y feet, your flagpole must be at least Z feet
tall'.
I haven’t bothered
to search the internet to see if that chart exists,
but it made me think about the human spirit and
the support it needs to fly and soar. Imagine
that the flag represents your dreams. The bigger
your dreams, the bigger a flagpole (read ‘more
support’) you need to allow those dreams
to come to fruition and soar.
Is the emotional and physical
support you have commensurate with the dreams
in your head and heart? How can you bolster your
foundation so that you are free to truly fly?
So, I ask again, how tall
is your flagpole?

Article - DON'T WASTER YOUR TIME - USE IT WISELY
By:

| Do
you waste time? Are you lazy and indolent or are
you continuously on the go, using every minute to
the maximum?
If you are in the first category,
there are a lot of very obvious things you can
do to improve, but in this article I want to concentrate
on those of us who are already using our time
constructively and examine how you can squeeze
even more from your day.
You may think that your life is
so full that this is impossible, but I recently
ran an inventory of how I used my time and realised
that there was still some room for improvement.
Here's what I discovered.
Timespace #1 – For
years I avoided doing any kind of exercise. It
was pretty easy for me, I had been skinny all
my life and even though I wasn't too fit, I was
still the right weight. As I got older, though
I realised that I had to take my body a bit more
seriously.
Since then I have become a moderate,
regular exerciser; I now go running for half an
hour every second day and visit the gym three
times a week. No problem there; I get satisfaction
from using my time well and I appreciate the results.
However, I calculated that I am
spending about five hours per week doing great
things for my body, but nothing for my mind. So
now when I'm pounding the streets or straining
at the weights, I use the opportunity to listen
to self development programs on my I-Pod, to concentrate
on goal visualization, to practice affirmations
or just focus on being grateful for all the good
things in my life. And there's a bonus too; because
the blood is racing through my veins, my brain
is more alert and better prepared to learn and
grow.
