HAPPY
LABOR DAY! |
|
| |
|
|
 |
|
MESSAGE
FROM THE PRESIDENT |
|
 |
 |
Happy Labor Day! According to an
article in
about.com, in the spring of 1872,
Peter McGuire and 100,000 workers went
on strike and marched through the
streets of New York City, demanding a
decrease in the long working day.
He spent the next year speaking to
crowds of workers and unemployed people,
lobbying the city government for jobs
and relief money. |
|
|
In 1881, he moved to St. Louis,
Missouri, and began to organize
carpenters there.
The idea of organizing workers
according to their trades spread around
the country. Factory workers, dock
workers and toolmakers all began to
demand and get their rights to an
eight-hour workday, a secure job and a
future in their trades. Peter McGuire
and laborers in other cities planned a
holiday for workers on the first Monday
in September, halfway between
Independence Day and Thanksgiving Day.
On September 3, 1894, President Grover
Cleveland proclaimed the first national
observance of
Labor Day. At this time the holiday
honored only federal workers in all the
states and The District of Columbia.
Today, Labor Day is celebrated the first
Monday in September and recognizes all
those who labor. The word "labor" is
derived from the Latin and means "to be
tired." Labor can be physical or mental
toil, but more commonly refers to
physical exertion for the purpose of
supplying material wants.
We have transitioned away from the
industrial age from which this holiday
was born to more of a knowledge economy
and many of you are working in office
environments.
This week's
article addresses your
relationship to your own personal labors
- those things to which to dedicate your
time, energy and emotion.

ARTICLE – GET OUT OF YOUR COMFORT
ZONE |
|
 |
|
Today's
article is a poem (author unknown)
that my friend, Sandy Rogers shared
with me in a workshop years ago she
was conducting on marketing.
|
I used to have a comfort zone, where I
knew I could not fail.
The same four walls and busy work were
really more like jail
I longed so much to do the things I'd
never done before.
But I stayed inside my comfort zone and
paced the same old floor.
I said it didn't matter, that I wasn't
doing much.
I said I didn't care for things like
diamonds, cars and such.
I claimed to be so busy with the things
inside my zone.
But deep inside I longed for some
victory of my own.
I couldn't let my life go by, just
watching others win.
I held my breath and stepped outside to
let the change begin.
I took a step and with a strain I'd
never felt before,
I kissed my comfort zone goodbye and
closed and locked the door.
If you are in a comfort zone, afraid to
venture out,
Remember that all winners at one time
were filled with doubt.
A step or two and words of praise can
make your dreams come true.
So greet your future with a smile,
SUCCESS IS THERE FOR YOU!
No matter how
successful we become nor how high
we've risen in life, we're still
operating inside of the 'space' in
which we feel comfortable.
Continue to press against the edges
of your space. Confront
your fear. Face the tiger.
When you're
standing on the precipice of an
enormous emotional cliff, step out
on faith and know that you'll either
land on new solid ground or learn to
fly.
