I started looking for activities I could
hand off. I made requests. I turned down a request.
Today, I took
more of my own advice and started creating more systems, processes
and scripts. I looked at all that was on my plate and asked
myself, “What activities will be the highest and best
use of my time?” The answer seemed to be “Serving
existing clients well and finding new ones whose needs match
my skills and passions.”
I’m now in constant search recurring
processes that can be automated, simplified or systematized.
I devoted time to training so that someone else could do some
things I had previously done to free me up to pursue those ‘highest
and best use’ activities. I’ve become a maniac about
asking for and receiving support! One of the high points of
my day was after asking someone else to work on a project that
had been rummaging around in my brain for several weeks. I dropped
the project off and went to lead a short workshop. When I got
back to my office, the completed project was in my email in-basket!
I had not felt such relief and gratitude
in a while! Now I’m hooked. I will keep training myself
to look for my ‘highest and best use’ activities
and will find people who are skilled in everything else to keep
me moving forward.
Delegation is one of the highest forms
of respect. Holding on to work is an act of arrogance and worse,
self-sabotage. I challenge you to look around and discover all
the people around you who as just waiting to be asked to support
you. Then LET THEM!!!!
